Andalucía, El-Chorro, El-Torcal, Ronda
something for everyone...
Walking
The surrounding hills offer a delightful introduction to inland
Andalucía. The apartment is surrounded by almond and olive
groves, but there are many tracks through the countryside that
take you through the hills and valleys. The views are stupendous,
and the walks can vary from easy to arduous, depending on your
abilities and fitness. Ask Mike or Ann for details. Wildflowers
are in abundance, particularly in Spring. Guided walks further afield can be arranged.
Mountain biking
For the fitness fanatic, mountain bikes can be
hired locally. The tracks offer a strenuous but rewarding outlook
on the remote Spanish countryside. (Please be advised there is
no insurance on the use of the bikes, and you will require your
own cover. )
Birdwatching
Blessed
with a wide variety of birdlife, the valleys come alive during
migration in Spring and Autumn. All year round residents include
hoopoes, various vultures and eagles, and an hour and a quarter’s
drive will take you to Fuente de Piedra,
one of the largest saline lakes in Europe, and the home of
thousands of flamingos. Beeeaters are in abundance in Spring
and Summer.
Swimming
Relax
by the pool if the mood takes you, or an hour's drive will take
you to the lakes of Guadalhorce, a popular swimming area. Alternatively
the beaches of the Costa del Sol are an hour and a half away.
Horse riding
Can be arranged locally. Explore the Andalucian hills on horseback.
You will require your own riding insurance.
Rock Climbing
Can be arranged through local guides, again you will need insurance. Some of the most famous climbs in Southern Europe are in the Chorro area.
places to visit
Antequera
The ancient Roman town of Antequera, a 45 minute journey, has numerous churches of interest, a Moorish castle and pre-historic dolmens.
Málaga
An hour’s drive, but the train from Alora might be
a better option. Málaga is the birthplace of Picasso,
has a Moorish castle, a Roman theatre, a Gothic cathedral and
very good shopping! A veritable jewel in the crown of Andalucía,
and often ignored, but should not be missed.
El Torcal - a designated National Park
A stunning limestone creation, higher than Ben Nevis
by 2 meters, and 30 minute’s drive away, though visible
from the apartment. Reputedly used in some of the Star Wars
films.
El Chorro and the Camino del Rey
A deep ravine through which the
Guadalhorce river flows from the lakes to the sea at Málaga.
The Camino del Rey was built to celebrate the new hydroelectric
station built in the 20's. Clinging to the edge of the cliff
face it is no longer open to the public. A mecca for rock climbers.
Granada
No self respecting culture visitor can leave without
a visit to the Alhambra. Just under a two hour drive, tickets
are better booked in advance. Mike or Ann would be happy
to arrange that for you. Should you wish to see more of Granada
than the Alhambra, then an overnight stay is recommended.
Córdoba
Scene of one of the largest Muslim mosques ever built,
now with a cathedral installed in the centre of the mosque.
Córdoba is just under a two hour drive, and is small enough
to enjoy in a day.
Seville
The capital of Andalucía, and full of Spanish history.
Seville is a large city, and to make the best of it,
after a 2 and a half hour drive, an overnight stay is essential.
The Giralda, the Torre del Oro and the Palacío Real
represent the glorious history of Southern Spain
Ronda
The home of modern bullfighting it was popular with bandits
in years gone by because of its position. The new bridge that
links the old and new towns has a grisly history. Nowadays
it is a popular tourist destination.
